PIVs (post indicator valves) are vital components of a fire protection system as they are able to open and close the water supply from outside the building. The post indicator valve standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) were modified in 2010. While these modifications provided more alternatives for system designers, they also made it less evident when they are required.

    PIV Maintenance & Inspection Requirements

There are maintenance suggestions as well as inspection requirements listed below to keep your post indicator valve in good operating order and up to code:

    Maintenance:

    • It is recommended that the PIV be exercised once a month by running it through an OPEN-CLOSE-OPEN cycle to assist prevent it from becoming locked in position or "frozen." The wrench mechanism should be lubricated with a non-detergent oil once a year.
    • The valve must be operated through its full range and then returned to the open position at least once a year, according to NFPA rules.

Inspection: The NFPA requires that PIV control valves be inspected on a regular basis. The inspection frequency is determined by the type of seal installed.

    • Wire sealed valves must be visually inspected on a weekly basis
    • Padlock & chain protected valves require visual inspection on a monthly basis
    • Valves installed with electrical tamper switches only need to be inspected on a quarterly basis

These regular visual inspections are in place to confirm that the valve has not been tampered with, either intentionally or accidentally, and that the PIV is providing the necessary water supply to the structure.

Our experts at Legion Fire Protection are here to help you keep these tasks performed and ensure that your PIV stays in excellent working condition and stays up to code.
